"Best Friend" - official lyrics
Best Friends-Eldren
we spent two months in a space capsule,
all we had to eat were freeze dried waffles,
how time moves slowly,
how time moves slowly.
on the edge of a rocky mountain,
stones crumbling beneath our feet.
FALLING DOWNWARDS
slowly, slowly
on our feet.
lets whittle away our time on now,
and call ourselves best friends,
lets fiddle around in the night and day.
hey,
i'll never forget all the things you said,
and when im alone, i will hope you're lonely too.
with a gun in her hands she stands,
never looking back(never back there)
detective roberts left her that way.
but the light inside her heart exploded.
a supernova
a supernova
(ghandi vs hitler speech/guitar solo)
la la la la la, la la la, la la la,
la la la la la, la la la, la la la la la la,
la la la la la, la la la, la la la,
la la la la la, la la la, la la la la la la
Lets whittle a way our time on sound
and call ourselves best friends
we'll find a way to get along,
singin that song.
and ill never forget all the things you said,
when im alone, i will hope you're lonely too.
ill call you my best friend
ill call you my best friend
ill call you my best friend,
ill call you my best friend.
(Thanks to Sarah for the official lyrics!)
First client meeting: A+, would do again!
It is ASTOUNDING what a difference it made to all of us to sit down and talk together! Everything is ok now - more than ok, in fact. The design team and 3 of the members of Eldren (Tyler, Nasir and Sarah) met this morning and all I can say is WOW. THIS VIDEO IS GONNA ROCK YOUR FACE OFF!
The band was amazing and enthusiastic about our ideas - the stop-motion look, the motion graphics on top of live action, the quirky/fun aesthetic. They introduced some of their own brilliance too: the use of kids as a sort-of 'mini me', jumping from one bizarre scene to another, the thematic unity of child-like fun combined with 'invisible friends'... man, we had a good time!

Each member of the design team is going to come up with storyboards and next Tuesday, October 25th we're going to all meet together again at 9am and choose our favorite scenes from each person's boards in order to make a really epic MASTER BOARD!
...I know you wish you could be there. Sorry, invitation only! You'll have to wait for the official update :)

Week Three update (and song)
We wrote a couple emails but the band didn't get back to us about either a song or their availability by Friday. It had been well over a week and Josh and I were starting to develop ideas around our favorite songs just in case they didn't get to us by our Tuesday meeting when we're supposed to pitch three video concepts to the band. (though it's kindda hard to do a pitch for a music video without a song, hu?)
Josh and I spent our weekend fretting, waiting, and testing/developing film effects and treatments that we can use regardless of the story or method involved in the music video. With a bare week to do storyboards and styleframes, our hope dimmed each day that we'd have a band that would be excited and enthusiastic to work with us under this tight time frame.
Tonight (Monday night) we got a short email from the band's rep - they want to do the song Best Friends, from Eldren II album. We meet with the band tomorrow so Josh and I are going to work all night to have our pitches ready for them in the morning. Eldren's rep didn't send any information with the song and the lyrics aren't anywhere online that I can find. So here, for my teammates, are the words as best I can hear...

5 Ways and 3 Scenarios (and one hope)
So, there are five ways to go about making a video:
Deciding what approach is best for what band and which filmakers... well, that's the trick, isn't it? I think the key is what scenario we're lookin' at. For instance...
- First, we could just shoot concert footage.
- Second, shoot concert footage and splice in footage of the band singing the song.
- Third, use concert footage of the band and footage of the band singing spliced with a story
- Fourth, use the band/actors and do all story.
- Fifth, go high-concept and do a story/concept in another medium (animation, stop motion, etc)

TIMEFRAME
This is the base schedule and timeframe for the Eldren video project: ten weeks. There is a large milestone to hit every two weeks: storyboards, then video footage completely shot, then the first (individual) rough cut, then the second cut, and finally we work together for the Master Cut. Keeping that in mind, the hardest and most busy times are going to be the two weeks we have to get all the filming done (Oct 20th-Nov 3rd) and the last few weeks when the three filmmakers have to work together to cut the Master version (Dec 1st- Dec 14th).

Skye's Video Inspirations
The Eldren's sound puts me in mind of the Beatles and Elton John and maybe a little David Bowie. Something Hipster, little 70s and some 60s thrown in for good measure. All orange color-space in my mind with people dressed in vintage and with added film grain to make it authentic. Fun - oh yes fun, even ironic. Delicate but not precious. Real exact depth-of-field and rack focus.
This makes me sound all artsy-fartsy but I'm not really. This is initial impressions, mind you, which I think it's important to get down - if I wanna move past it to something else I gotta know what 'it' is I'm moving past. Of the things floating in my head here's a few that are all crowded up front:
The first is a video by Sigur Ros named Glosoli, found here: http://youtu.be/Zr_MJAOyOeU The video is interesting while moving slowly - hard to do right, that - and you get a good feeling of the music through the visuals. Plus kids - there's something modern and timeless with kids all steam-punked out. It's innocent and the audience is always voting for them to succeed in whatever they're up to.
The second is a video I remember that my cloassmate Patty Toner did where he motion-captured the film and layered text on top. It's here at his Vimeo at http://vimeo.com/20942843 (There's a better example of what I want in the opening for Red Bull's new skiing movie The Art of Flight but it's mostly in the opening and there's not footage online of that.) I like the idea of the layers of information - that it could be a video of the band, which is interesting, but then there's something else going on - I won't use the term 'subtextually' because it is literally "over text" but you know what I mean. Maybe this is the way to get a story into a traditional music video.
Third - oh, this is fun. Fun and crazy and WOWTIMESINK but really, really fun.
