- First, we could just shoot concert footage.
- Second, shoot concert footage and splice in footage of the band singing the song.
- Third, use concert footage of the band and footage of the band singing spliced with a story
- Fourth, use the band/actors and do all story.
- Fifth, go high-concept and do a story/concept in another medium (animation, stop motion, etc)
Deciding what approach is best for what band and which filmakers... well, that's the trick, isn't it? I think the key is what scenario we're lookin' at. For instance...
Best case scenario:
- We all communicate well and get back to each other within a day.
- Expectations are realistic, fun, attainable and we're all excited to see a vision realized.
- The band is 100% on board and willing to go to work for as many days as we can, as many takes as we need for those two weeks.
- The filmmakers prepare well, come ready to shoot, and work their butts off.
- The band lets us come to their show and use it as B-roll.
- AND they're available for a pick-up shoot (for a day) after the two weeks is up!
That would be AWESOME.
Next best case:
- Communication takes place, but response is 2-4 days.
- The band can all get together only twice a week for the two weeks.
- The filmakers are unprepared, shoot sloppy, do ok work.
- Some show footage as b-roll. No pick-up shots.
Worse case:
- We don't communicate well. Calls/texts aren't returned.
- The band shows up late/doesn't all show/ is unenthusiastic and cranky about the shoot.
- The filmakers are unenthusiastic and drop the ball on preparing, shooting, or working on the video.
- No b-roll, show or pick-up shots.
(I know which one I'M hoping for!!)
